How Contrast Recovery Was Born: My Accidental Discovery That Changed Everything

By Coach Jack · 30 June 2026

Contrast Recovery wasn't created from a business plan—it began with a freezing swim in a Snowdonia lake that unexpectedly brought lasting relief from years of chronic back pain. This personal journey led to a deep exploration of cold water immersion, infrared sauna and contrast therapy, ultimately inspiring the creation of Contrast Recovery at JWC Health & Fitness: a private space where anyone can experience the potential benefits of recovery, relaxation and wellbeing.

How Contrast Recovery Was Born (Completely by Accident)

Contrast Recovery was born from a personal, and very much accidental, discovery.

For all of my adult life I've lived with acute joint pain, particularly in my lower back. Over the years I've learned lots of ways to manage it; strengthening the muscles around it, staying active, working on mobility, being sensible with training and doing everything I can to minimise medication. On the whole, I've managed to live a full and active life while keeping the symptoms under control.

But nothing has been as transformative as this.

It was an icy January morning back in 2021. We were away for a family weekend in Snowdonia, sleeping in a camper van. Unsurprisingly, I woke up folded in half with the usual stiffness and discomfort.

Looking out across Llyn Padarn, something just told me to get in.

I'm not talking about a higher power or some life-changing spiritual moment. Just one of those gut feelings where you think, "Why not?"

So that's exactly what I did.

(I've still got a photo of the exact moment. I must find this!)

The immediate sense of relief was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. More surprisingly, it wasn't just one of those five-minute adrenaline highs. My back genuinely felt better for the rest of the day. I was healed - Hallelujah!

As someone who's spent years trying different ways to manage pain, that got my attention.

Naturally, I took a 'deep dive (pun intended) into the science behind cold water immersion.

I bought a makeshift cold tub for the garden, which eventually got upgraded to a proper ice bath with a chiller, meaning I could keep the water cold, clean and ready to use every day of the year.

Those who know me are probably sick of hearing me bang on about my ice bath. I make absolutely no apologies!

Yes, I use it because it helps my back, but over time I've come to appreciate so many other benefits too. It's become five minutes in my day where everything else stops. It's uncomfortable, but in a strangely addictive way, and I always come out feeling more awake, refreshed and ready for whatever the day throws at me.

You could say the the ice bath found me.

but The infrared sauna was a much more deliberate addition.

As I continued reading the research around recovery, circulation, relaxation and general wellbeing, it became clear that heat therapy could complement cold exposure really well. Where the ice bath leaves me feeling alert and invigorated, the sauna encourages me to slow down, relax and unwind. It helps ease muscle tension, gets me to switch off for half an hour and, perhaps most importantly, makes the whole experience far more enjoyable.

Used together, they're known as contrast therapy.

Alternating between heat and cold creates a completely different recovery experience than either on its own. Many people use contrast therapy to support recovery after exercise, reduce feelings of muscle soreness, improve circulation, manage stress or simply carve out some time to look after themselves. While everyone's experience is different, it's something I've personally found hugely beneficial.

And that's where Contrast Recovery came from.

It wasn't created because wellness is fashionable or because every gym suddenly needed an ice bath.

It was created because I genuinely believed other people deserved the opportunity to experience something that had made such a positive difference to me.

Whether you're training for your next HYROX, recovering from a tough gym session, dealing with everyday aches and pains, or simply looking for 45 minutes away from the noise of daily life, that's exactly what we've built.

A private, peaceful space where you can enjoy an infrared sauna, a professionally chilled ice bath and guided breathwork at your own pace, whether you're coming on your own or with a friend or partner.

Will it transform everyone's life like it has mine?

Probably not.

Nothing works for everybody.

But if there's a chance it helps someone move a little easier, recover a little better, or simply feel a little more like themselves again, then creating Contrast Recovery has been worth every second.

Sometimes the best ideas aren't planned.

Sometimes they start with a freezing cold lake in Snowdonia and a simple gut feeling.
